Montessori FAQs

  • Does my child need to be fully washroom independent? Open or Close

Yes, we require every child to be fully washroom independent to attend school.

  • What is the difference between Montessori and Daycare? Open or Close

Montessori has a full educational curriculum which realizes the intellectual potential in all children who are open to being in a learning environment. Daycares, while some do have an educational focus, are not set up as a formal classroom and do not follow an educational curriculum to prepare children for their school years.

  • Why do we encourage full days for students between the age of 4 - 41/2 to 6? Open or Close

All of the materials children are shown throughout their time at Montessori School are building blocks for more difficult work to come. We show the children each of the materials in small steps so that we prepare them for success at the next level. Students happily and diligently work throughout their time here and watch what the older children are doing. This in-turn, really makes them want to do the same work in Mathematics and Language. If parents then decide to pull their child to go into Kindergarten for example, it will be right at the time their child/children will be ready to begin operations in Mathematics and also just on the brink of reading and writing! The material for older children is much more involved and takes a lot of time to complete. For this reason, the afternoon is designed in order to allow enough time to finish each task without as much interruption from the younger children who require more direction. The afternoon program is also a time to discuss areas such as Culture, Geography and Sciences in more detail.

  • Why do we encourage parents to visit all Montessori Schools in the area? Open or Close

Each Montessori School is a little bit different. The basic materials will be the same however the approach may be different, the classroom will be set up differently, and each Directress will be different as well. We always tell interested parents that they need to go with whatever school they feel the most comfortable with and have the most confidence in.

  • Why do you not have any climbers in the playground? Open or Close

We do not have climbers in the playground for several reasons. The two key reasons; they are dangerous for young children in a group setting and they do not encourage communication skills that are appropriate for this stage of development. Instead, we have balls, skipping ropes and bubbles in the summer. Outside time is wonderful without playground equipment as the children are free to communicate, explore the outdoors and be creative! At Whole Harmony Learning Centre, we give children conflict resolution tools in order to effectively communicate with one another both in and out of the classroom.

  • Why must the children attend school 5 days a week? Open or Close

It is part of the Montessori Method to have students attend school 5 days a week. This is very important for children’s development as the classroom acts as a small community outside of the home. If students do not attend 5 days a week they will miss out on this development of community. It also allows for children to have stability and security as they know what to expect each day. Although each material is shown one on one to tend to the individual needs of the children, there is a certain pattern we follow (curriculum in more traditional terms). This pattern, or curriculum is very difficult to keep up with if students are not in attendance every day.
